Public Speaking...

How many of us have looked at a politician giving a speech or interview on the television and thought, “if only I could speak in public so confidently”, they seem to speak so effortlessly, never getting tongue-tied or frustrated; as though it was the most natural thing in the world. Pressure, nerves, don't seem to bother them at all!

Some people, it's true, are more outgoing, it just happens to be part of their natural character, they're born with it – lucky them! For others, the fact that they must engage in some form of public speaking can be a cause of great anxiety; remembering, perhaps, the horror of looking out over all those faces when they had to speak as a child in the school play, or recite a bible passage in church.

It could just be that you feel you are the quiet, reserved type and public speaking goes against the grain for you.

In truth, nine times out of ten, it's not the public speaking that we fear; almost everyone speaks in front of people everyday, the difference is: it's normally only a few people at a time and they're usually familiar to us.

Whether it be fear of the unknown, fear of failure, or fear of humiliation, all of these arise from a perceived threat that causes us to feel vulnerable.

These fears often surface in the form of self doubt and this in turn causes us ask questions of ourselves:

  • What if people aren't impressed with my presentation?
  • What if they get up and walk out?
  • What if they judge my accent?
  • What if I don't use the correct technical wording?
  • What if someone asks a question I can't answer?

Apparently, King George VI suffered from stage fright and stammered. Naturally, being a king, he couldn't really avoid public engagements and turned to hypnotherapy for help.

Hypnotherapy obviously worked for King George, as his stage fright and stammering are not common knowledge, and if it worked for him then it can most certainly work for you.

Do yourself a big favour and pick up the phone! Call me now, it won't cost you anything to have a chat with me about your needs.

I'm only a phonecall away:
